In the fall of 2000, the hydrogeology class (Geo 400) collected soil cores at two locations within Bousson Environmental Research Reserve (BERR) to examine soil physical properties as a function of topography. Figure 1 is a location map of the upland and lowland sites.

Soil cores were collected by the students using a xxxxx. Each sample was collected in a x by y cm brass ring. Field-moist samples were weighed on a portable balance (to the nearest 0.01 g), oven dried overnight at 105° C and reweighed.

Four soil properties were calculated for each sample: dry bulk density (ρb), porosity (n), gravimetric water content (θg) and volumetric water content (θv). Equations for these calculations can be found in section 6.2 of Fetter (2001). Tables 1 and 2 are the results of these calculations.
