Analysis
of Results

Although
I received great results from the Academy Theatre survey, I cannot use
the results based on the demographics present that day. Because
the majority of those surveyed at the Academy Theatre do not live in
the vacinity of my site and those at the Liberty House do, I must follow
the suggestions of those most directly related to the site.
When
analyzing results from the Liberty House poster survey, I noticed trends
in the selection of design types. A garden/zen atmosphere was highly
supported from the survey with winding walkways and copious vegetation.
There was however a great diversity of results in terms of materials
for the space - some liked metal, some liked wood, and yet others liked
the 100% recycled materials. I kept all these results in mind
when preparing three possible designs.
Design
Drafts |
The first design considers a 100%
recycled picnic table, a metal trash receptical, metal swing set, metal
bike rack, metal round bench, grill, and bird feeder. The current vegetation
would be dug up and replaced by flowering and non flowering native vegetation
including species that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. A stone
path splits in two directions - one towards the picnic area and the
other towards the zen seating area.

[Design One]

The
second design considers a round metal picnic table, 100% recylced trash
receptical, 100% recycled planter, 100% recycled bench, a metal bike
rack, and a grill. Incorporated in this design are elements such as
a stone patio with a bench and planter and installed vegetation conducive
to butterflies and hummingbirds.

[Design Two]

The
third design considers a wood picnic table, wood trash receptical, wood
bench, bike rack, and grill. This is the simplest of the three designs
and boasts the vegetation original to the lot after extensive cleanup.
This design includes a stone laid picnic area and several birdfeeders
located by the lawn swing.

Final
Concept Design |
After meeting with the
residents of the Liberty House and showing them all three draft designs,
it was determined that they would like the 100% recycled materials with
a stone path and the vegetation already located at the space to been
kept and cleaned up. The residents also took great interest in painting
the fence located along the northwest side of the lot as an art project
for the neighborhood children.

at the design meeting | 3.2.07]

From
the residents' suggestions, I designed a space to include:
* 100% recycled materials
* River-rock pathway meandering throughout the space
* Circular bench placed around the large maple tree
* Zen garden with bench
* Lawn swing with bird feeders nearby
* Sculpture
* Picnic area
* Existent vegetation with cleanup
